What Is Ransomware?

What Is Ransomware?
Ransomware is the result of a small virus type programme that can be unknowingly downloaded on your PC that when activated encrypts all your data (Documents, Music, Pictures, Videos etc.)

Once encrypted it can only be unencrypted by you paying the ransom and hoping your data will be unlocked.
When the original writers of this dangerous software released it they had a code of conduct that they would not charge an excessive amount (around £100) and they would always unlock the data once the fine had been paid.
Recently however the writers have started allowing other people to use their software for a fee on the same conditions as before.
It now appears that some people who took up the opportunity to rent and modify that software, resulting in many people paying ransoms of £1000.s and having paid the consumer does not get the data unencrypted. Banks will no longer refund customers who have been attacked so they are left with no money and an unusable PC.
You can be attacked through a website as well as emails.
According to Cisco’s 2015 Annual Security Report, the top industries that pose a risk to you through their websites, depending on where you live, include aviation, media and publishing, agriculture and mining, food and beverage, insurance, automotive, and real estate and land management.
All of this information points to one inescapable conclusion: hackers, cybercriminals, and malware distributors are smart about what they’re doing. They’re targeting the sites we visit often, they’re finding ways to better conceal malware, and they’re updating the strategies that work so they continue being effective. So you need to be one step ahead.
In order to attempt to tackle this problem all updates must be checked a minimum of once a week. This includes any Anti-Virus programme that is installed.
Originally ransomware was only targeted at large Companies. These large companies have invested heavily in hardware and software to stop these attacks so small businesses and home users are being targeted on an ever increasing basis.
As well as Anti-Virus we advise that a good anti-Spyware programme is used. Again having it without updating it and regular scanning is pointless because you will not be protected.
In order to be totally protected against loss of data you must backup your data at least weekly. Once up to date disconnect from the PC. If the PC is attacked any attached device will also become encrypted including cloud storage.
